Earn a Discount at Bon-Ton through Donations to Goodwill

Local Dateline — The economy is showing signs of recovery, but a new survey from the National Association for Business Economics shows that job growth will likely be slow for the next couple of years. People who are already dealing with long bouts of unemployment need help to find jobs and take care of their families. By donating clean, gently used clothing and textiles during the semi-annual Goodwill Sale at Bon-Ton stores, donors can help those individuals obtain job training and employment and receive a discount on new merchandise at the same time. Complete story.

Oakland Maryland Goodwill® Store Opens

The newest Goodwill retail store officially opened its doors on Wednesday, February 3 in Oakland, Maryland.  Among those on hand for the grand opening festivities were Oakland’s mayor, Peggy Jamison; District 3 County Commissioner Dennis Glotfelty; and Horizon Goodwill Industries CEO Craig M. MacLean. “The Oakland community has been very welcoming of us,” said Virginia Stotler, HGI’s Regional Director of Retail Operations.

Pam Trickett of radio station 104.5 WKHJ kept everyone entertained with a live, two-hour remote broadcast from the store, interviewing HGI staff, as well as Mayor Jamison and Commissioner Glotfelty.

Mayor Jamison said “(I am) delighted to be here to welcome them to the Town of Oakland and to the community. No matter how small or how large, (we are) always happy to have new employers in the town. They (Goodwill) also open their doors to employment of folks who may need a little extra assistance, a little extra help getting started and that’s wonderful”

Bon-Ton's Goodwill Sale Event Collects More Than Five Million Items

October 29, 2009
MILWAUKEE, WI. – Customers and associates of The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. donated approximately 5.2 million gently used clothing and home textile items during its semi-annual Goodwill® Sale event, which was held September 16 – 30. The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., comprised of Bon-Ton, Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s, Younkers and Parisian stores, received donations at its 279 stores. Goodwill will sell the donations in the communities where they were collected, and the revenues will go to support job training to assist individuals in achieving economic stability.

Goodwill expects the donations to generate $12-15 million in revenues. 84 percent of Goodwill’s revenues are directed into employment placement services and other supportive services for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face employment challenges.

“The Goodwill Sale is a great benefit to our customers and our communities,” said Bud Bergren, president and CEO, The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. “We want to thank everyone who donated this season. The Goodwill Sale exemplifies our commitment to the communities in which we operate.”

“Partnerships such as the Goodwill Sale engage people in a way that helps Goodwill expand and enhance its career programs in the community, “ said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “We are grateful that Bon-Ton holds this event each season to help individuals in local communities become self-sufficient.”
